A couple of months ago I took Mick into the vet because we were concerned about his eyes. His eyes are pretty blue ( not in a good way) and if you throw a ball for him and he doesn't see exactly where it lands then he can't find it. So the first vet said nothing was wrong. The second vet actually dialated his eyes and confirmed there was something wrong but she wasn't sure exactly what. The next step would be taking him a dog ophthalmologist. Yep, they actually exist. And, as you can imagine, they're quite rare which also means pricey. But the vet also told us that dog shows usually have an ophthalmologist and for $30 you can have their eyes checked. Usually this is for showing dogs who are going to be bred, but the service is open to anyone.
So Saturday was the Bremerton Dog Show and off we all went, Mick included, to the dog show. Emmy and London enjoyed seeing all the dogs, but Cannon thought we were torturing him. When we didn't get to see the vet before lunch, we took Cannon to the local YMCA to swim and he was much happier!

Emmy watching the Huskies |
We didn't get to see the Border Collies, but saw lots of other breeds show like the Huskies, Australian Shepherds and Collies. The things I learned: Old English Sheepdogs are HUGE! As are the St. Bernard's. And the people who trot the dogs around the ring wear really bad suits, just like at the Westminster show!

Finally it was our time to see the vet and the unfortunate news is that Mick is pretty much blind in his left eye and has limited vision in his right eye due to scarring from a previous infection. Poor guy. But it's ok because at least it's not a degenerative condition, and despite bumping into a few things and not finding his ball, he manages pretty well with what he has. At least he has a loving forever home now.
Sweet Mick ... he looks like such a loving dog. I'm so sorry to hear about his bad vision. He's lucky to have such a loving family.
