Another glorious morning and we're heading back into Yellowstone to see some more sights. It was the plan to go to Lamar Valley today, but we missed the turn-off and ended up at the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone. No problem, wanted to see that too!
|
At the historic entrance to the Park - I'll have to PhotoShop myself into this picture... |
Driving to the Grand Canyon, we would stop at beautiful turnoffs like this one.
|
One of the falls along the way |
And a stop at the petrified tree.
|
This is a petrified tree - 50,000,000 years old! |
And a stop at the river.
|
Near Tower Falls - you can really see the yellow stone that the park is named for. |
And a stop for a bison.
|
First bison spotting |
Then we reached the Canyon which was really impressive. I've never seen
the Grand Canyon, but this one was pretty amazing.

Part of the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone |
There was a very steep and very twisty path down the side of the canyon to the top of the Lower Falls - a 308 foot high water fall. The men decided not to hike the trail, but the rest of us wound our way down for a spectacular treat.

At the top of the falls |
|
You can see the green water of the Falls beginning to cascade behind them. |
We were treated to a spectacular rainbow over the canyon while we were there. This may be one of my favorite pictures of the trip.
We later found out that an 8-year old girl fell off the trail a day after we were there and died. What a sobering thought.

Another part of the canyon |
More scenic landscapes...
|
This was at Tower Falls, where the Canyon officially ends. |
As the day was getting late, we decided to do one last stop before heading back to the cabin. These are the Mammoth Hot Spring terraces formed by hot springs and a lot of minerals in the ground. They are constantly changing and weirdly beautiful.
Looking down onto the Mammoth Hot Springs area and then into Montana. Somewhere back there is our cabin...
Back at the ranch, hanging out and relaxing.
