My friend in Gig Harbor, Jillian, who is also friends with Kelly, drove up to Whidbey Island for the ceremony on Wednesday. Since it's the last day of school for the kids tomorrow, we couldn't stay for the BBQ afterwards, but we were glad to be part of the afternoon ceremonies.
Under blue skies and with the sea shore just behind the venue, it was a beautiful ceremony and very touching. Mike's older brother who is retired Navy gave a speech and then Mike and Kelly, Matt and David were all honored for their time and service.

I still love the military pomp (I think I get it from my mom) and the traditions that go with it. I think the most touching part of the ceremony was when the MC read a poem called, "The Watch" which was about Mike's commitment to the Navy over the last 30 years.
Each time he came to the phrase, "the watch", they rang the bell and Matt (Mike's son who is now ROTC at U. of Washington) processed forward a few feet. By the end, Matt was standing right in front of Mike and then Matt relieved Mike from the watch allowing him to "go to shore". It was very moving and symbolic.

Congratulations, Mike and Kelly! Fair winds and following seas!
